REAL-TIME VIDEO ENHANCEMENT (RTEV) TECHNOLOGY FOR USE IN MILITARY APPLICATIONS

ZMicro’s Real-Time Enhanced Video (RTEV) technology improves visual clarity in live video. It enables you to see better in challenging visibility conditions and discern important details that might otherwise be missed.

Using RTEV video enhancement technology, you can see through fog, sand, smoke, low-light, dust, shadows, glare and more. While RTEV is a clear fit for degraded visual environments, many customers are surprised to see how effective RTEV is in helping them track visual details in relatively good quality video. This easy-to-use technology lets you extract more value from your video and gain the confidence to make critical decisions faster.

Environments

RTEV can improve visibility in challenging conditions including haze, fog, snow, clouds, night, underwater, dusk/dawn, glare/ blinding light, helicopter brownout, dust, rain, pollutants, people in shadows, smoke, low-light, long range, better identify moving targets, thermal effects, overexposure, over-saturated, mist, spray, infrared, electro-optic, contrast enhancement, and resolution enhancement.

Applications

Developed for use in military applications, RTEV can be used in drone & missile guidance systems, aircraft heads-up, helmet displays, armament sighting systems, armored vehicles, static surveillance systems and more. RTEV can bring striking improvement to imagery collected in degraded visual environments. This has led to its adoption in other industries including medical, surveillance, broadcasting, transportation, maritime, forestry, astronomy, forensics and aviation.

Key Features

RTEV Adaptive Algorithms

LOCALLY & GLOBALLY ADAPTIVE ALGORITHMS

ZMicro’s video enhancement technology can leverage both globally adaptive and locally adaptive algorithms. Locally adaptive algorithms look at each pixel individually and with respect to its surrounding neighborhood, it decides how to transform that pixel accordingly. Globally adaptive algorithms, on the other hand, look at the statistics of the whole image to determine what adjustments to make and then applies the result globally to the entire image. Leveraging both approaches provides the best visualization approach in terms of detail and color.

RTEV Adaptive Algorithms

PLUG & PLAY ARCHITECTURE

RTEV can be integrated into virtually any pre-existing system. Users have the option to keep their existing video display equipment and use our compact standalone appliance to enhance incoming video streams. Alternatively, users can purchase one of our rugged displays with built-in RTEV. RTEV video enhancement technology works on any type of video feed and outputs the same resolutions as received.

RTEV Adaptive Algorithms

NO ADDED LATENCY

ZMicro’s RTEV technology is real-time video enhancement with no added latency. The enhancement algorithms are written to utilize parallel processing and leverage Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) to support image processing algorithms in hardware. The latency is measured in microseconds and provides no latency to the human eye.

RTEV Adaptive Algorithms

CUSTOMIZED ENHANCEMENTS

Advanced users can customize video enhancement to achieve the best settings for their application. Users can adjust RTEV enhancement settings using the on-screen display (OSD) menus built into our rugged displays and video enhancement systems. Alternatively, enhancement settings can be configured using an attached PC running our Graphical User Interface (GUI) or by using our Application Programming Interface (API) commands.

RTEV ALGORITHMS

  • CLARIFIER

Clarifier is an ultra-large convolution kernel algorithm that conducts locally-adaptive contrast enhancement. Using patented IP, each individual pixel is compared to its neighboring pixels and pixel values are adjusted to increase the subtle differences in pixel values – all in real-time. The Clarifier technology enables viewers to discern subtle differences in brightness and contrast that were previously difficult for the human eye to perceive. The result is a video clarification and enhancement that enables users and operators to see more detail.

  • TRUE COLOR

True Color is a globally adaptive dehazing algorithm is designed to remove the detrimental effects of haze, fog, smoke, mist, dust or other contaminants and bring out the color in degraded video. Video degradation commonly occurs in two major components: (1) “Extinction”, i.e., attenuation (scattering, absorption, etc.) of light from the object(s) by the intervening medium, keeping some or all of it from reaching the camera, and (2) “Airlight”, i.e., ambient light arising from sources other than those which are in the field of view of the camera, being scattered into the camera’s aperture by interaction with the intervening medium, arriving at the camera travelling in a direction as if it was coming from the object(s) themselves. Both Airlight and Extinction factors in the equations governing how the processor attempts to remove these effects can be dependent on the wavelength (color) of light in the image, in consideration of the scene conditions, type and composition of the atmospheric or other medium and the physical processes involved therein.

  • EXPANDED SHARPENER

The Expanded Sharpener algorithm is a locally adaptive operation implemented with a moderately sized convolution kernel. In addition to the traditional edge sharpening operation, our implementation also comprises a low spatial frequency suppression, and the capability to simultaneously smooth the very highest spatial frequencies to reduce undesirable noise. The result is a remarkable algorithm that highlights objects and features and helps bring out subtle details and variation in a video that may not otherwise be seen by a human.

  • COMBINATION OF ALGORITHMS

ZMicro’s cutting-edge algorithms can all be used in conjunction with each other to obtain the best possible enhancement to real-time video. Each algorithm – Clarifier, True Color, and Expanded Sharpener – provide different complementary enhancement features and functionality that when used together provide remarkable improvements to visualization of details in video enabling viewers to see more detail in real-time.

Optional Algorithms

ADAPTIVE TEMPORAL NOISE REDUCTION (ATNR)

Our Adaptive Temporal Noise Reduction (ATNR) improves image quality by eliminating undesired artifacts, i.e. noise which results from the normal operation of the camera sensors in various environments. ATNR implements advanced techniques which enable it to filter out noise without adding blurring to moving objects.

EDGE DETECTION

The Edge Detection enhancement helps highlight man-made objects in video streams. This can be useful, for example, in search and rescue missions at sea, or recognizing target locations in a military strike, or spotting markers during visual navigation.
